The Federal Government has been moving towards stronger restrictions on insurers using adverse predictive genetic test results when assessing life insurance, a change designed to reduce fears that medical insight could later become a financial disadvantage.

Underwriting rules, exclusions, premium structures, claims definitions and the level of cover all shape whether a policy will do its job when needed. People with a family history of serious illness may welcome clearer protections, but they should still compare policy terms rather than assuming every product will respond in the same way.

There is also a timing issue. If you have been delaying genetic testing because of insurance concerns, it may be worth speaking with a medical professional and, separately, seeking licensed financial advice before making cover decisions. Taking out or changing cover should be based on your broader household needs, debts, dependants and existing insurance, not solely on anticipated rule changes.
