Income Protection Complaints Remain a Key Life Insurance Pressure Point

New AFCA annual review data highlights why claim clarity, evidence and communication still matter

The information on this website is general in nature and does not take into account your objectives, financial situation, or needs. Consider seeking personal advice from a licensed adviser before acting on any information.

The Australian Financial Complaints Authority’s latest annual review has put income protection insurance back in focus, with the product again attracting the highest number of life insurance complaints in 2025-26.
The figures are a useful reminder that the real value of cover is tested not at purchase, but when illness or injury interrupts a person’s capacity to earn.

AFCA reported 1,561 life insurance complaints for the year from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026, a modest increase across the category. Within that total, income protection accounted for 599 complaints, up from 530 the previous year and representing 38% of life insurance complaints. The most common life insurance issues included denial of claim, delay in claim handling, premium or fee disputes, claim amount concerns and allegedly misleading product or service information.

For Australian workers, the message is not that income protection claims routinely fail. A complaint figure is not the same as a finding that an insurer has acted incorrectly, and AFCA data captures disputes that have escalated beyond internal complaint channels. Even so, the pattern shows where friction can occur: eligibility definitions, medical evidence, financial proof of income, offsets, waiting periods and the pace of communication during assessment.

Income protection can be especially complex for self-employed people, contractors and business owners because earnings may fluctuate and financial records may be less straightforward than a payslip. A claimant may need to show not only that illness or injury affects work capacity, but also how pre-disability income should be calculated. Policy terms can also interact with other payments such as sick leave, workers compensation or Centrelink support, which is why understanding how income protection insurance interacts with sick leave, workers compensation and other payments can be important before a claim arises.

The practical takeaway is to treat an income protection policy as an active document rather than a set-and-forget purchase. Consumers may wish to keep copies of policy schedules, product disclosure statements, tax records, employment contracts, medical certificates and correspondence with their insurer or super fund. When a claim is lodged, clear timelines, written records and prompt responses to reasonable information requests can help reduce avoidable delays.

It is also worth checking whether the waiting period and benefit period still match current cash flow and obligations. A short waiting period may cost more, while a longer one requires greater savings to bridge the gap before income protection benefits may begin. AFCA’s data reinforces a simple point: the details matter most when household income is already under stress.

A recent Australian Financial Complaints Authority decision involving a vandalised Hino truck is a useful reminder that disclosure disputes in commercial motor insurance turn on evidence, not assumptions. Reported by insuranceNEWS.com.au on 15 October 2026, the matter ended with Suncorp being ordered to reinstate the policy and reassess the claim after AFCA found the insurer had not proved that undisclosed driving history would have justified refusing the risk. - read more

Recent transport industry sales updates point to a more selective new-truck market, with operators weighing replacement timing against finance costs, emissions planning, availability and contract confidence.
