Softer Commercial Insurance Market Gives Tradies More to Weigh Up

Recent market updates point to lower rates in several business classes, but cheaper premiums are not the whole renewal story

Australian trade businesses heading into renewal season may find the commercial insurance market more competitive than it has been for several years, with recent industry updates pointing to softer pricing across several business insurance classes.
For tradies, that does not automatically mean every premium will fall, but it does create a useful moment to review whether cover still matches the way the business actually works.

Market commentary published in October highlighted stronger insurer appetite and greater capacity in areas such as commercial property, liability, professional indemnity and cyber. Taylor Fry's FY2026 RADAR analysis also suggested the soft commercial cycle could continue for some time, with projected average written premium reductions for commercial property and public liability this financial year. Those are broad market signals rather than a guarantee for any individual electrician, plumber, carpenter, builder or subcontractor.

The practical point is that renewal should not be treated as a simple price comparison. A lower premium may reflect improved market conditions, but it may also sit beside changes to excesses, sub-limits, endorsements, definitions or exclusions. A trade business that has added staff, taken on larger contracts, bought new equipment, changed premises, introduced design or advice work, or started using subcontractors more heavily may have a different risk profile from the one described in last year's schedule.

Public liability is a good example. Even if liability rates are generally under downward pressure, job size, site access, hot works, excavation, height work, high-value client property and previous claims can still influence terms. Professional indemnity can also be relevant where a tradie provides reports, measurements, specifications, compliance advice or design input. These exposures may not be obvious if the business owner thinks only in terms of physical work on site.

Tradies reviewing renewals may wish to check the following before focusing on the headline premium:

  • whether business activities are accurately described;
  • whether tool, stock, vehicle and workshop values reflect current replacement costs;
  • whether contract-required public liability limits are still being met;
  • whether any new exclusions affect common job tasks;
  • whether higher excesses would create cash-flow pressure after a claim.

This is also a timely reminder to read the policy schedule together with the wording and certificate of currency, not in isolation. Our guide to exclusions, limits and excesses explains why those details can matter as much as the premium itself.

A softer market can be helpful for small trade businesses, especially after several years of cost pressure. The opportunity is not just to chase a cheaper renewal, but to test whether the overall insurance program still fits the contracts being accepted, the assets being used and the risks being carried on each job.

Why Liability Pricing Relief Still Needs Caution in Restaurants

Australian restaurants and cafes may be entering a more competitive phase for liability insurance, but the latest market analysis suggests owners should avoid treating softer pricing as a signal that risk has reduced. KPMG Australia's October 2026 liability insurance review, drawing mainly on APRAs National Claims and Policies Database to December 2024, points to moderating pricing momentum after several years of premium strengthening, while also highlighting uneven claims experience across public liability and related classes. - read more
