Australia’s latest financial dispute data has put insurance claims handling back in the spotlight, with consumers and small businesses continuing to seek outside help when problems with insurers cannot be resolved directly.
The trend is a timely reminder that an insurance policy should be assessed not only on premium, but also on how clearly it explains cover, how exclusions work, and how effectively claims are managed when pressure is highest.

The Australian Financial Complaints Authority’s latest complaints update points to familiar pressure points across the sector: delays, disputed claim decisions, communication breakdowns, premium and policy administration issues, and disagreement over the value of settlements. These themes are especially important for Australians dealing with home, motor, life, income protection and business insurance, where a slow or confusing claims process can quickly affect cash flow, family stability or business continuity.

For policyholders, the key lesson is practical. Before choosing or renewing cover, take time to compare more than the headline cost. Look at excesses, sub-limits, waiting periods, definitions, exclusions, claim evidence requirements and the insurer’s approach to vulnerable customers. If a policy appears cheaper, it may be because it offers narrower cover, higher out-of-pocket costs or less flexibility at claim time. That does not automatically make it unsuitable, but it does mean the trade-off should be understood before a loss occurs.

The data also extends a broader conduct conversation across the industry, including recent scrutiny of the Life Insurance Code of Practice and the way insurers communicate with customers during stressful events. Regulators, dispute bodies and consumer advocates are increasingly focused on whether policyholders receive clear explanations, timely decisions and fair treatment throughout the claims journey.

Small businesses should pay particular attention. A dispute over property damage, public liability, professional indemnity or business interruption cover can be costly if records are incomplete or policy limits are out of date. Businesses should keep asset schedules, contracts, invoices, photographs and incident records organised, and review sums insured whenever operations, stock levels, equipment or premises change.

Where cover is complex, insurance brokers can help customers understand policy wording, compare options and prepare more complete claim documentation. The bigger message from the latest dispute figures is clear: insurance value is proven at claim time, so policy selection should balance affordability with clarity, service quality and confidence that the cover will respond when it is needed most.
